Sheriff credits their experience as detention deputies
(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Two new patrol deputies were sworn-in to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday morning.
Deputy Joshua Gaither is a Jac-Cen-Del graduate who previously served as a detention deputy at the Decatur County Detention Center.
Deputy Morgan Smith is a Columbus North graduate and also served as a detention center at the jail.
Both deputies were sworn-in by Judge Matthew Bailey and they replace Deputy Noah Moore, who joined the Indiana State Police, and Detective Jean Burkert, who retired after 24 years of service.
Sheriff Bill Meyerrose says Gaither and Smith’s previous work in the jail was a big factor in the hiring process.
“Working in the detention center is a good first step for anyone wanting a career in law enforcement, which paid off for both Deputy Gaither and Deputy Smith. We look forward to the assets Deputy Gaither and Deputy Smith bring to our department,” Meyerrose said.
Gaither and Smith are now working with field training deputies and will attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in the near future.
