Adam Holtkamp, Carson Hughes families come together for good cause

Updated: Jul 9

Adam's grandma takes things into her own hands

(OSGOOD, Ind.) – The families of two young men who unexpectedly passed away are coming together through shared experiences.

34-year-old Adam Holtkamp was a well-known Decatur County farmer who tragically passed away from a farming accident in January 2021.

18-year-old Carson Hughes was a Jac-Cen-Del senior, a multi-sport athlete and avid wildlife photographer who passed away in March.

Adam and Carson likely never met, but their untimely deaths not only shocked their communities, but also showed how Southeast Indiana rallies behind each other when a family is in need.

The Holtkamp family hosts the Adam Fun Run Jeep & Side-by-Side each June.

“One of our organizers, Grace Allgeier, approached Carson’s family about them donating a print with the agreement that anything raised would be split between both Adam and Carson’s foundations,” said Adam’s wife, Jamie Holtkamp.

Carson’s parents agreed and one of his photographs was put on display for the silent auction during Adam’s Fun Run on June 23.

Ella Mae Holtkamp is Adam’s grandmother and was born in the 1930’s. She was raised to only spend money on the necessities, but something felt different on the morning of Adam’s Fun Run.

“I was raised not to spend money on things I don’t need. But, that morning something told me that I need to buy Carson’s photo,” she said.

Ella Mae initially told herself she would not spend anything more than $300.

But then she figured, why not $500?

There was a bidding war at first, but nobody could match Adam’s grandmother.

Ella Mae purchased Carson’s photo and it is now displayed in her living room.

The Holtkamp and Hughes family met for the first time on Monday night where Adam’s wife presented a check to Carson’s parents.

“Their story has touched all of our hearts and it is nice to just be able to collaborate with them and reach out and talk with them. It’s an opportunity to share some of our experiences with grief and share stories of our loved ones, and I think it helps everyone heal when you can find someone who has some common ground with what you’ve gone through.
