Athletes compete at Special Olympics Spring Games

Track & Field event held at Milan High School

(MILAN, Ind.) – Special Olympic athletes from across Southeast Indiana participated in the Spring Games at Milan High School Saturday.

It featured 108 athletes who participated in the track & field event which included various competitions. The ages of athletes range from 8-years-old to adult.

The competition helps some of the athletes secure a spot in the Summer Games in Terre Haute.

Heather Sterwerf first got involved in Special Olympics as a high schooler in 2006 and now serves as the Area 9 Director.

“We ask all of our surrounding high schools to come and participate because there is nothing like it, it brings so much to joy,” Sterwerf said.

She wants more people to know about the annual event and they are in need of additional volunteers.

“You will have a smile on your face the entire day. There’s nothing disappointing about it. To see these athletes perform at their best is just the best part of my day,” she added.

The athletes come from Decatur, Dearborn, Ripley, Franklin, Fayette, Ohio, Shelby and Wayne counties.
