Police: Suspects using local names

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- The Decatur County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a scam targeting those seeking rental properties.

Authorities say homes are appearing on Facebook Marketplace as available for rent, however they are not.

"The homes "for rent" are not for rent and are owned and occupied," the sheriff's office said.

The suspects are using local names with fraudulent email addresses, police added.

Police urge citizens to not send any money without verifying the home is actually for rent.

"This can be done by asking to see the home first or confirming that the person is a legitimate owner of the home or under contract to rent the home," deputies said.
