Batesville officials warn against flushing wet wipes

Can cause sewage issues

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – The City of Batesville is asking residents to properly dispose of wet wipes.

Even though some are marked as “flushable,”  residents are asked not to dispose wet wipes through the toilet.

The city says it can create fatbergs which is a hard clump of fibers, fat, and oils that collect in sewage systems and have become more common because of the dramatic increase in the use of disposable wipes.

The emergence of fatbergs have become a serious and expensive issue for sewage management, and can lead to sewage floods, environmental damage and public health risks.

“These clogs can lead to backups in your home, or damage to public pumping equipment that can increase sewer bills for everyone. Right here in Batesville, we’ve had to replace several pumps this year as a direct result of this,” City of Batesville officials said.

According to the EPA, the correct way to dispose wet wipes are by dropping them into a trash can, just as you would with cleaning items, paper towels, and rags.

To ensure your garbage container stays hygienic, use a liner bag and clean it regularly with disinfectant.
