Batesville wrestler credits coaches, parents as he commits

Maher also thanked a teammate and friend

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) -- A Batesville senior will continue his wrestling career at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati.

David Maher has also earned a scholarship based on his athletic and academic achievements.

Maher says he's honored by the opportunity and grateful for the coaches and teammates who have gotten him to where he is today.

"I’d like to give credit to Bob Weiler, for encouraging me to continue this journey through both the triumphs and defeats. I’d like to thank Matt Linkel for stepping into this new role as head coach and hitting the ground running since his first day, instilling both hard work and brotherhood into Batesville’s wrestling program," Maher said.

Its a mutual respect as coaches recently gave Maher the season's first Junkyard DAWG Belt, which is earned by a wrestler who shows passion and gives full effort on the mat and the classroom.

"He leads by example daily with his hard work and positive attitude. He has taken the offseason as an opportunity to work hard and prepare, and has hit the ground running in week one of practice," a coach said.

While Maher now looks forward to college, he also credits one of his former teammates, Mason Neely. He says Neely was a great teammate and better friend who supported Maher and kept in on the right track. Neely passed away last December.

The Bulldog wrestler also thanked two people who have been there since day one.

"Both my parents, Dan and Heather Maher, for supporting me and always pushing me to give it my best. They have always pushed me to give 100%, and have wisely taught me how to win and lose with courage and pride, and to keep coming back stronger," Maher said.
