89-year-old Brookville man lays wreath at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Watch a portion of the ceremony here:

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) –  Harold Back and his wife, Donna, have visited all 50 states and have also been on every continent.

However, their most recent trip is considered to be at the top of the list and the most humbling.

Harold Back is 89-years-old who worked at Fernald for 17 years during the Cold War-era.

For those who have not heard of Fernald, it was a nuclear fuel processing plant outside of Cincinnati that was built in the 1950’s by the Department of Energy.

Harold’s granddaughter, Abbie Alig, came up with the idea of organizing a trip for her grandfather to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Abbie surprised Back earlier this summer when she told him that the trip was going to happen this week and he would be placing a wreath.

The family traveled to Washington and arrived at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday afternoon.

Harold was joined by his wife, as well as children Michael, Dave and Sarah Alig, during the wreath laying ceremony.

There was a heavy downpour just an hour before they were scheduled to present the wreath, however the sun came out just in time for the 3:15 p.m. ceremony.

“It was a trip of a lifetime, it meant a lot to take part in this and to still do that at his age is amazing,” his daughter, Sarah, said.

They recommend other families consider taking the trip to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and being part of a wreath laying ceremony.

Here are some photos from the ceremony provided by the family:
