Ceremony held in D.C. on Thursday
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Carson Hughes took this photo of an otter at Versailles State Park on the morning of February 5.
He labeled it ‘Breakfast Time’ as the otter had a fish in its mouth when the photograph was taken.
The 18-year-old captured this unique wildlife moment, along with many others, because of his love of the outdoors, and his willingness to wait for the perfect moment.
Following Carson’s passing in March, the photo was submitted by Jac-Cen-Del art teacher Stacy Gray to be considered for the Congressional Art Competition.
A vote was held to determine which art piece out of hundreds of entries would represent Indiana’s 9th District and be displayed in the U.S. Capitol.
Representative Erin Houchin called Carson’s parents, Jason and Mandy, to inform the family that he won the contest and invited them to a ceremony in Washington.
That ceremony took place today and Carson’s ‘Breakfast Time’ photo will now be on display for the next year.
“Carson had a passion for photography and loved to show others how beautiful this world really is. He would be so honored to know one of his photos would be hanging in the Cannon Tunnel of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C., and we are so proud of the legacy that Carson has left for all of us to share and enjoy,” Jason said.
His parents are hoping to keep Carson's legacy alive and you can click here to follow along with updates.
