Columbus Police commend whistleblower in child abuse case

Somebody reported suspicious marks on a young boy

(COLUMBUS, Ind.) – Columbus Police are recognizing the individual who reported their concerns to authorities.

The police department received a call on Wednesday after a 2-year-old boy was seen with suspicious marks on him at Nexus Park.

Investigators responded and say they found numerous red marks and bruises to the boy’s arms, face, and torso.

“Upon further medical evaluation, the child also had broken ribs. Investigators believe many of the bruises and red marks were caused by the child being struck with a cord,” Columbus Police said.

The boy’s mother, 25-year-old Hanna McBride, as well as her husband, 22-year-old Jose Manuel Villeda Gomez, both of Columbus, were arrested and charged with Neglect of a Dependent.

The child was taken into protective custody and placed with a family member.

Columbus Police added, “In many other states, certain people, such as doctors or teachers, have a duty to report child abuse or neglect. However, in Indiana all of us have an obligation to make a report when we have “reason to believe that a child is a victim of child abuse or neglect” under Indiana Code 31-33-5-1.”

If you suspect child abuse, you can report it to your local police department or the Department of Child Services.
