Created the popular rock painting program that gives back to schools
(RISING SUN, Ind.) – There is a true “rock star” that resides in the Rising Sun community.
Bonnie Carrigan came up with a fun, artistic way to connect with the community when she established the “Rock on Rising Sun” program more than seven years ago.
What is the program you ask? She and her friends paints rocks, which are then hidden within the city limits for others to find and re-hide, or replace with their own creation.
The rocks are painted inside the activities room at the Rising Sun Hoosier Boy Senior Housing complex. The friends that are involved have been nicknamed the “Rolling Stones.”
Take a look at just a few of the thousands of painted rocks found in Rising Sun:
Bonnie painted more than 7,000 rocks the first year of the program and she hasn't slowed down. There is also an important purpose of the rocks.
Winning rocks sponsored by area businesses yields their finders $5 by returning the rock to its supporter. Once returned, the company pledged to make a donation to the Bulletproof Classroom Door Project for Rising Sun-Ohio County Community Schools, a cause that Bonnie is passionate about.
Rock on Rising Sun has generated more than $3,000 to provide bulletproof doors at the schools.
Bonnie and her Rolling Stones are always on hand at local festivals with their painted rock projects.
Bonnie’s unique project even led to her receiving Indiana’s Golden Hoosier Award last year.
Sadly, Bonnie has announced that Rock on Rising Sun will be coming to an end at the end of the year.
We greatly appreciate everything you’ve done Bonnie and you are a true Community Champion in Southeast Indiana!
The 812's Community Champion series is brought to you by the Decatur County Community Foundation.
