Benefit held for Jarrod Nichols
(MILAN, Ind.) -- First responders, veterans and community members gathered at the Milan American Legion for a local police officer Saturday.
Jarrod Nichols was seriously hurt in a crash that also claimed the life of his girlfriend in Northern Indiana last month.
Nichols is an Aurora police officer who was off-duty at the time of the crash.
He and his girlfriend, Riley Duerstock, were traveling through Marshall County when they were struck by an alleged drunk driver.
On Saturday, a benefit called "Night Out for Nichols" was organized by the Milan Fire Department.
It featured a touch-a-truck event where area first responders brought their vehicles, including police agencies, fire and EMS, and even UC Air Care.
There was also a basket raffle, dinner and a benefit ride earlier in the day.
The Milan American Legion also donated $11,000 to Nichols.
