(MISSOULA, MT.) -- Connersville native Evan Shafer and his Montana teammates are now preparing for the FCS national championship.

Montana won a thrilling double-overtime game against North Dakota State on Saturday to give the university their first trip to the title game since 2009.

Shafer is a tight end on the team and joined the program after transferring from Hillsdale College earlier this year.

The former Spartan had a crucial first down catch during the game Saturday.

The 2021 Connersville graduate was a standout lineman who earned team MVP both his junior and senior year. He also earned All-Eastern Indiana Conference honors for three straight seasons.

The Montana Grizzlies will play No. 1 South Dakota State in the FCS Championship in Frisco, Texas on January 7.
