Coroner ID's remains found near Whitewater River

Remains found earlier this week

(WEST HARRISON, Ind.) -- The skeletal remains found near the Whitewater River in West Harrison this week do belong to the woman who was killed during flooding this summer, police said.

The Dearborn County coroner confirmed the remains belong to 53-year-old Virginia Pennington.

Pennington and a man were staying at a cabin on Wolf Creek Road near Brookville when they were swept away by flooding on July 28.

Her remains were found on private property on Pinkhook Road in West Harrison on Tuesday, which is more than 19 miles away from where the flood occurred.

Indiana Conservation Officers extensively searched for Pennington but were unable to locate her this summer.

Sheriff Shane McHenry commended the Dearborn and Hamilton Coroner's Office in identifying the remains so quickly.
