Hoping to raise $50K this year
(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – The annual initiative of local farmers helping to feed the hungry continues this summer in Decatur County.
Farmer’s Feeding the Flock was created by Merrill Smith who passed away last month.
The proceeds from the program support Greensburg Bread of Life, a non-profit dedicated to hunger relief and providing a safe haven for those in need.
Each year, a local farmer provides acreage for planting and local agriculture businesses make donations to offset the cost of soil preparation, planting, fertilization, and harvest.
After the growing season, the crops are harvested and sold with Greensburg Bread of Life receiving all net profits to support organizations needs.
This year's field is a 20-acre cornfield provided by Brewsaugh Family Farms located at Sandusky. The field is "in Memory of Bob Brewsaugh" who gave so much to our community before passing away from cancer.
“In addition to raising money to help people in need, the project helps educate the community about the cost and risk of crop farming and promotes agriculture as agriculture truly is the Bread of Life,” organizers said.
Farmer’s Feeding the Flock are about 50 percent toward their fundraising goal of $50,000.
