A police escort parade led kids to the shopping destination
(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- Nearly 150 kids in Decatur County had the unique opportunity to shop with a first responder on Saturday.
The "Santa's Heroes" program originally started as "Shop with a Cop" but has grown to include nearly every first responder agency serving Decatur County.
Each child received $250 to spend on clothing and toys and first responders made sure the kids didn't overspend.
So, if you do the math, more than $35,000 was spent on Saturday. All of the money comes from donations from local businesses and private donors.
Before the shopping began, police cars and fire trucks led the school buses of children on a lights and sirens parade through town.
"We really want to make a big deal about it because we want to make sure these kids feel special," said Ashley Wilson, with the Decatur County Sheriff's Department.
Parents and guardians dropped the children off at a designated location where they received a breakfast, met Santa and participated in games and activities before the shopping event.
Westport firefighter Craig Haley said "Santa's Heroes" is one of the best days of the year as a first responder.
"We're not showing up on the worst day of their lives, we're showing up to help them get their presents, and to see them glow and be happy is awesome," Haley said.
The children that were part of the program were nominated by the schools and the sheriff's department ensured they are in need.
