Elementary students from across the area honoring WWII veteran turning 100

Rising Sun veteran will celebrate milestone birthday Saturday

(RISING SUN, Ind.) – It is amazing to see the support coming in for a local World War II veteran.

99-year-old Leroy Guard will celebrate his milestone 100th birthday on Saturday.

His family put out a request for people to send him birthday cards in advance of his birthday.

While Leroy calls Rising Sun home, there are students from across Southeast Indiana who are stepping up to show their appreciation.

At Aurora Elementary, students in Lori Friedhoff’s art class have made tons of cards and are planning to deliver them to Leroy this week.

Another school honoring the WWII veteran is located more than an hour away from Rising Sun.

Students at South Decatur Elementary School filled out birthday cards and placed them in the mailbox on Tuesday morning.

South Decatur and Aurora Elementary aren’t the only schools wishing Leroy a happy birthday.

Birthday cards can be mailed to 220 S. Poplar Street Apartment 5 in Rising Sun, Indiana 47040.
