Family Saves Trapped Owl in Batesville

Updated: Apr 4

Hoping it makes full recovery

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – A Batesville man was mowing grass when he noticed something along his fence line on Friday.

A Great Horned Owl was tangled in barbed wire and was unable to escape.

Davin Jobst, and his brother, Shay, was able to free the owl and realized it’s wing was severely injured.

“It tried to fly away but we grabbed it and used a knife to get some more of the wire out of the wing,” Davin’s wife, Jacqueline said.

The family knew the bird required additional care and decided to take it to a non-profit called Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitators in Hope, Indiana.

“I didn’t know if he needed water, or how long he had been tangled up in the fence. But they reassured us that they would provide food and water as part of the process,” Jobst added.

Their hoping the bird makes a full recovery and will be released back into the wild in Batesville in a few weeks.

“I’m hoping that can happen it would be really cool to see him fly off,” she said.

If the owl is unable to make a full recovery, it will be placed in an educational program for elementary students to learn about the different breeds of owls and birds.

By law in Indiana, sick, injured or orphaned birds and wildlife should be taken to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
