Former Greensburg police chief passes away at 89

Served in Navy before returning home to Decatur County

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- The Greensburg Police Department is mourning the loss of former police chief Lester Gay.

He passed away at the age of 89 on Monday.

Before his policing career, Lester served in the U.S. Navy and later owned a photography business on the square.

He joined the police department in 1967 and would serve in various capacities. He first served as police chief from 1975 to 1979 before a short stint as the Captain of Detectives.

Gay once again was named police chief in 1980 and served in the role until his retirement in 1989.

"Our community has lost a great asset and his memory will forever be cherished," the Greensburg Police Department said in a statement Thursday.

Visitation and funeral services will be held at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg on Monday.
