The 812's Kenzie Ogden toured the courthouse
(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – As construction crews continue stripping down the Ripley County Courthouse, they are discovering the building’s unique structure and interior design.
Project manager Art Noel said he has enjoyed exposing the tin ceilings and historic architecture during the project.
Remains of older wallpaper, tin trim and ceilings, and arches are among the list of notable qualities found at the core of the building’s structure.
The courthouse’s last major construction project was in 1974. After fifty years, many renovations were necessary to revamp the historic spot, ensuring its legacy lives on.
The project includes mechanical work, electrical work, new ceilings, new lighting, window replacements and interior painting.
County commissioner Chris Schmaltz said a key motivator in this project is to make the space safer.
One way to ensure safety is with the addition of new fire alarms and sprinkling systems.
The project is made possible with funds provided through the AARP as well as other contributors in the community.
The project is estimated to be complete by late January 2025.
