Curtis Gillman has a store in Winchester
(WINCHESTER, Ind.) – Batesville native Curtis Gillman is the COO of the family-business Gillman Home Center.
They have 16 stores across the area including in Winchester, which was hit by a tornado on Thursday night.
Gillman said he first got a call from the store manager around 10 p.m. last night.
“He said it was bad. You never really know what that means and don’t understand it until you see it,” Gillman said.
The first thing Gillman Home Center did was calling all of their employees to ensure they are safe.
Curtis says all employees are accounted for and he believes none of them lost their homes.
He decided to make the trip to Winchester on Friday as the Gillman Home Center there is only open for emergency supplies, such as tarps, lumber, generators and chain saws.
Curtis got to town this morning and was greeted by road blocks, a lot of damage, and no cell phone service.
He says cell phone service turned on around noon Friday.
The Winchester Gillman location is right in the same area of some of the most significant damage.
The Walmart in Winchester took a brutal hit and Curtis also saw a strip mall that he says is, “basically gone.”
“There is a taco bell by our store and it completely gone. It is just not there anymore,” Gillman said.
How is the Gillman Home Center in Winchester? It is still standing and somehow only suffered minimal damage.
There is some minor damage to the building and the lumber yard.
There were initial reports by Indiana State Police have fatalities last night, however, it appears, as of now, that nobody has died.
