Greensburg American Legion seeking donations for crosses

Post #129 hoping to replace outdated crosses

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – The Greensburg American Legion is hoping to upgrade the crosses they use to honor veterans at South Park Cemetery.

The Legion wants to replace the existing War Memorial crosses used during the Memorial Day ceremony every year.

“These are the crosses which designate each war that the United States has participated in. They are installed at the base of the GAR circle prior to the Memorial Day service and remain for a few days after the service in honor of our community veterans,” organizer Russell Wilhoit said.

During the service a memorial wreath is placed on each cross to honor those that have sacrificed their lives in these conflicts and in memory of all those who have served.

The crosses they have used for many years need to be replaced. They have developed a new design and the cost of the project is $6,000.

“We are asking for donations to replace these crosses with the new design that will serve us well into the future,” Wilhoit added.

The Decatur County Community Foundation has committed to support this project by utilizing funds from the Ella Jo Briggs Veterans Field of Interest Fund to provide matching funds up to $3,000.00 for all donations.
