Greensburg Fire Department Installs Free Fire Alarms

Story written by The 812's Kenzie Ogden

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – On Thursday, the Greensburg Fire Department collaborated with the American Red Cross to install fire alarm systems and raise fire safety awareness in local neighborhoods.

Firefighters delivered 64 free smoke detectors to residents in Vista Village and Highland Addition on Thursday afternoon.

The event was in partnership with the Decatur County United Fund and this was the third year it has taken place.

Katrina Hawkins serves as administrative marketing assistant at the Decatur County United Fund.

“Seeing the collaboration is really amazing to me… we’re going where there’s a need and identifying those needs is always important,” Hawkins said.

Teams of local firefighters were paired up with rotary club members and additional Red Cross volunteers to offer free installations in two Greensburg neighborhoods.

Emma Moffett and Erica Vonderheide were among the several Red Cross volunteers that contributed to this initiative. Moffett and Erica are members of Greensburg’s rotary club.

“If we have volunteers, we can impact the community and get more accomplished in a shorter amount of time and hopefully save some lives,” Moffett said.

The campaign’s objectives are to save lives, reduce injuries and build resilient communities.
