(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – The Greensburg Police Department is adding a new tool to their arsenal that can save lives.
The agency is equipping officers with a LifeVac, which is a device that can be used on an adult or child who is choking or aspirating.
Greensburg police officer Dillon Able knows that this tool can save lives. When he was an expecting father, he purchased the LifeVac but never thought he would put it to use.
A few years later, his child was choking and was turning purple. He utilized the LifeVac which saved his child’s life.
“We don’t come across that situation very often but the tools we have are very violent and can be harmful to children and elders. I asked my sergeant if [LifeVac] is something I could run up the ladder,” Able said.
The department and city officials agreed and decided to add the product to all patrol cars.
There was an officer training on Tuesday where Police Chief Mike McNealy credited Able for bringing this tool to the department.
“When you get a call about a person choking, you feel very helpless of what you can do to get the person breathing again. This gives us the opportunity to pull the foreign object out of the way to help them start breathing,” McNealy said.
McNealy added that this is another example of his officers who search for new ideas to better serve the community.
