(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A groundbreaking ceremony will be held ahead of a project at the Decatur County Youth Sports Complex this winter.
The upgrades will include the installation of turf on the four main ball diamonds.
Rob DeHoff serves as the Decatur County Parks & Recreation Sports Coordinator and says upgrades were badly needed at the complex.
“My primary objective is to attract visitors to the county through sports tourism and to promote our facilities,” DeHoff said.
The turf fields are already contributing to tourism as USSSA Baseball and Softball has committed to 13 tournaments in Greensburg next year.
“They emphasize that the turf’s biggest benefit is its resilience, allowing quick return-to-play after rain,” DeHoff added.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19 and the public is invited.
Construction is expected to be complete by April.
The Decatur County Youth Sports Complex is located at 245 S. County Road 200 West in Greensburg.
Funding for the turf upgrades was secured through a $450,000 allocation of ARPA funds to the Parks Department.
DeHoff says he plans to make additional enhancements, including new paths, expanded concessions/restrooms, and eventually, turf on all eight diamonds to elevate the complex’s status along the I-74 corridor.
“With Decatur County’s prime location, we anticipate a significant economic boost from sports tourism. With the expected tournaments alone, the county and surrounding areas could see over 72,000 visitors, contributing an estimated $3.75 million to the local economy,” DeHoff said.
He says he hopes to make improvements at other facilities to attract tournaments, such as those for soccer, pickleball, volleyball, basketball, and flag football.
“We are eager to leverage all our facilities through partnerships and collaboration to maximize their use and economic impact for Decatur County,” he added.
