Holton’s fire department pursuing multiple grants

Aimed at updating equipment, increased training

(HOLTON, Ind.) – The Otter Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department had a record-breaking year when it comes to the amount of runs in 2023.

The volunteer firefighters respond not only to fires and vehicle accidents but also to medical emergencies. Matter of fact, the majority of their runs last year were medical-related.

Fire Chief Dale Comer says the department is taking the initiative to substantially improve the ability to respond to anything that comes their way.

In the past, Otter Creek relied on other departments to perform extrication services during accidents.

The fire department is pursuing two grants to purchase extrication equipment. It comes at a cost of more than $30,000 and they will find out if they are approved this spring.

Otter Creek has also applied for a $40,000 grant through the Rising Sun Regional Foundation to help with the purchase of a new first-response vehicle.

The firefighters are currently using a brush truck to respond to medical emergencies. The new vehicle would have more seating for first responders while also being equipped with medical supplies.

Another grant the fire department is pursuing is through CSX Rail. Comer hopes to receive $25,000 to buy manikins, first aid kits, medical supplies, another AED, and rescue airbags.

While the department is awaiting to hear back on these grant proposals, the firefighters are already planning to receive additional training.

“This is our way as a department to step up and serve the community the best we can,” Comer said.

On a fun note, the fire department is also stepping up their community engagement.

They will host the Holton Fire UTV/Jeep Ride on June 29 and are also bringing back the  popular Holton Jamboree on September 7.
