Served Ripley County for more than 30 years
(VERSAILLES, Ind.) — This is Steven Harmeyer and sharing stories about other people comes very natural to me.
However, sharing my own story is something I don’t do well. So here’s some background on my connection with Ripley County deputy Randy Holt.
Long before journalism, my first love was law enforcement.
In the spring of 2023, I was working at WLWT and loved it. But, I missed being in Southeast Indiana and just wanted to come home.
Looking to leave WLWT, I applied to be a deputy with the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, and somehow, made it through the physical exam process.
I advanced to the in-person interview portion which took place at the Ripley County Annex Building.
Sheriff Rob Bradley walked in the room with deputies Corky Houseworth and Randy Holt for the interview.
I was grilled up-and-down during the interview before the sheriff and Deputy Houseworth left the room.
Randy Holt didn’t leave his seat. When the door closed, Holt started talking.
“You have a lot going through your head and you should figure out who you are before you figure out who you want to help,” he said.
That sentence may not mean much to you, but I've never looked back.
Randy passed away from cancer this week. Read more here.
