(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – New Horizons has operated their ice cream shop in Batesville for nearly four years this summer.
Sweets at Liberty Park opened in September of 2020 as a way to provide opportunities for New Horizons clients who are in their pre-employment program.
New Horizons is a non-profit dedicated to creating empowering opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Kayla Yaeger is the Director of Employment Services for New Horizons. She says the shop serves up more than just delicious ice cream.
“This is an employment opportunity for some of our clients and it allows them to come in and get hands-on work experience while getting paid,” Yaeger said. “They get exposure to the point-of-sale system, customer relations, and other food service functions, so there are a lot of different experiences and opportunities by working here,” Yaeger said
All of the proceeds from Sweets at Liberty Park go toward the clients New Horizons serves as well.
The ice cream shop is open from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and also open from noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Yaeger added that Sweets at Liberty Park not only benefits clients and customers, but gives a glimpse to the work the non-profit is doing in the community.
“It’s an opportunity to show people what New Horizons does, and what we can do for our clients. I think it can educate people, and show people that the people we serve, what their capable of and the abilities they have,” Yaeger said.
Sweets at Liberty Park was established through community partners including the Hillenbrand Foundation, John A. Hillenbrand Foundation, Rising Sun Foundation, Belterra Casino, City of Batesville, and the Ripley County Community Foundation.
