ISP investigating inmate death in Ripley County

Female was found unresponsive Wednesday afternoon at the jail

(VERSAILLES, Ind.) -- The Indiana State Police are investigating the death of a woman while she was in custody at the Ripley County Jail.

Police are not providing the identity of the 57-year-old woman.

Investigators say she arrived at the jail around 3 p.m. Wednesday after being arrested in a different county on a Ripley County warrant.

She became unresponsive inside of a jail cell shortly after arriving at the Ripley County Jail, police said.

Jail staff and responding medical personnel provided medical care to the individual.

She was rushed to Margaret Mary Health where she was pronounced deceased.

"Per normal protocol, the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department requested the Indiana State Police to investigate the death," ISP public information officer Stephen Wheeles said.

The investigation is ongoing and police do not suspect foul play.
