Southeastern Career Center was locked down for hour
(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – The Southeastern Career Center went on lockdown around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday.
Police immediately responded to the school after receiving a report of a student with a gun.
The investigation revealed that there was no active threat and no gun was recovered.
However, it was a tense and scary time for students like 18-year-old Hayley Hall who was inside the career center.
Hall is a cosmetology student and recalled the moment she learned about the lockdown.
“I didn’t know what was going on we just heard lockdown,” Hall said. “When you are in school you’re trained to automatically go to a safe spot and make sure the door is locked.”
The cosmetology department had two clients they were providing services to at the time. The students and the two clients sheltered in place.
“We were just trying to keep calm because we had two older ladies that were with us,” she recalled.
They stayed in the locked room for approximately an hour, Hall said.
“But it felt a lot longer than that,” she added.
Jac-Cen-Del junior Savannah Steele was also inside the career center.
“We were scared. People were crying. My teacher grabbed a fire extinguisher in her hand in case someone would have came in,” she said.
Referencing the soft lockdown, Savannah said, “There was nothing soft about this. I saw the look on my teacher's face and heard the fear in the woman's voice on the intercom. I heard yelling from the hallways.”
The investigation concluded shortly before 2:30 p.m. and the students were released to their buses or parents.
“‘It was scary but I am glad everything turned out alright,” Hayley said.
