Jefferson Co. man sentenced 81 years for killing girlfriend

Shot girlfriend, set fire during incident

(MADISON, Ind.) -- A Jefferson County judge sentenced 29-year-old Dalton Simmonds to 81 years in prison on Wednesday.

Simmonds was convicted in August of shooting and killing Christy Newman in May of 2022.

Prosecutors say the shooting happened while Newman was attempting to grab her belongings and leave the house. Simmonds also set her curtains on fire during the incident.

“This is an appropriate sentence for this heinous crime that took the life of Christy “Cricket” Newman,” said Jefferson County Prosecutor David Sutter. “This case involving domestic violence ended in the most tragic way."
