Lawrenceburg teacher is cancer free!

Will return to classroom after Christmas break

(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) -- A Central Elementary teacher surprised her fifth grade students in the classroom Tuesday.

Maggie Cole has missed the entire school year so far after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia this summer.

The teacher has been on the hearts and minds of her students and fellow staff members this year.

A T-shirt fundraiser called "Maggie's Support Squad" was launched in August and the school gave proceeds to Cole.

One fifth grade student, Brylee Haring, came up with her own concept of creating bracelets for a good cause.

"She started doing things for Mrs. Cole the minute she received the news that Mrs. Cole wouldn’t be starting the school year," said Brylee's mother, Kate.

The fifth grader created a bracelet fundraiser that raised $5,258 for a wig fund for the teacher.

Cole came to the classroom for the first time this year on Tuesday.

"Mrs. Cole is cancer free!! She was able to stop by today to surprise her class! They may have actually been speechless," Central Elementary School said on Facebook.

Maggie is expected to return to the classroom after Christmas break.
