Local officers save injured hawk in Osgood

Ripley County, Osgood officers waste no time helping bird

(OSGOOD, Ind.) – Law enforcement received an unusual call for service on Thursday.

Osgood police officers and Ripley County deputies responded to a report of an injured bald eagle on Baseline Road in Osgood.

With Indiana Conservation Officers not able to immediately arrive, the local police officers had to take matters into their own hands.

Police and dispatchers coordinated with multiple wildlife rehabilitation centers across the state.

Special Deputy Matt Chastain received detailed instructions from UTOPIA Wildlife Rehabilitators in Bartholomew County on how to care and transport the injured bird.

“They agreed to rehabilitate the bird if transport could be arranged. Chastain volunteered to transport the bird to ensure full time patrol officers were not pulled away from the count,” said Ripley County Chief Deputy Lee Davidson.

Initially the bird was believed to be a Bald Eagle, however it is now believed to be a Red-Tailed Hawk or Red Shouldered Hawk.

“I would like to thank everyone who participated in this rescue. There is a strong culture of Law Enforcement Agencies working together across disciplines, and this was an outstanding example of the interagency cooperation that occurs in Ripley County,” Davidson added.

Some other officers that were involved included Osgood Town Marshall, Daniel Craig and Ripley County Deputy JT Linkel.
