Local sheriff launches program for kids who deal with trauma

Partnership in Decatur County

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department is launching an initiative to help children who face trauma.

It is called “Handle With Care” and it’s a partnership between the sheriff’s department and Decatur County Community Schools.

When deputies encounter a child at a traumatic scene, they will notify the school with a message that reads “Handle With Care.”

Police will not provide details on the incident, but rather let the school know that the child may need extra attention.

The school system will then notify the appropriate teacher or counselor so they can monitor the student’s behavior and determine what support is needed.

Support could come in the form of teaching assistance, giving more time on tests, sending the student to the nurse's office to sleep, or sending the student to the counselor.

If needed, the counselor will make a referral to a mental health provider.

“We are excited to work with such great partners on a program that will help students achieve at their highest levels despite whatever traumatic circumstances they may have endured,” said Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose.

To get involved in the “Handle With Care” program please contact Deputy Eric Blodgett at (812) 663-8125.
