Local volleyball team overcomes massive deficit to win

Team brings together girls from local high schools

(FORT WAYNE, Ind.) -- A local club of 16-year-old high school volleyball players participated in a tournament in Fort Wayne over the weekend.

During Sunday's first match, the girls went down early and were losing by a large margin.

"We could have folded when we got down 1-9 early in the first set, but they never quit, came together, worked as a team and clawed back," coach Cassie Laker recalled.

The girls fought back to win the match by a score of 25-16.

"Which says a lot about who they are as a group,” Laker added.

The 16-Elite team would go on to be undefeated and win the championship at the Ft. Wayne MLK Challenge.

The team consists of girls from Batesville, Milan, North Decatur, South Dearborn, South Ripley and Switzerland County.

"This team is full of a bunch of competitors who have no fear. They play well together and genuinely want everyone to be successful," Laker said.

This team is part of Southeast Indiana Volleyball (SEIVB), a developmental club for local girls who want to improve their level of play and understanding of volleyball.

Over the past three years, the club has expanded from being just developmental to now including elite-level teams.

During the same tournament this weekend, the 15-elite team finished as runner-ups and the 14-Elite team finished in third place overall.

"This was a great learning experience for them as they faced some great competition and continue to learn different parts of the game," Laker said.

SEIVB welcomes girls from age 10-18 to build their volleyball skills and love for the game. Learn more by clicking here.
