Longtime WLWT photojournalist from Greendale retires

Spent more than 41 years covering news Cincinnati

(CINCINNATI) – A Greendale resident is retiring Thursday after a long career at WLWT News 5 in Cincinnati.

Greg Rahe is a Lawrenceburg graduate who began his television career at WCPO in 1979.

“That was during the Al Schottelkotte era and with growing up around this area, I felt like I really made it then,” Rahe told The 812.

He was eventually offered a position at WLWT in May of 1983 and served as a photojournalist for the station until his final shift today.

Rahe says some of his more memorable stories was covering the Cincinnati Bengals Super Bowl in Miami with Jerry Springer in 1989.

“Another one that sticks out is the Lucasville Prison riots in 1993 when WLWT was the only station allowed inside the prison,” Rahe reflected.

In recent years, Rahe has worked the overnight shift covering news from 12 a.m. to 8 a.m. on weekdays.

After his final shift this morning, his 41-year tenure was celebrated by his colleagues. Here are a few photos taken by WLWT photojournalist John Massey:

One of the final stories he covered this week brought a sense of his career coming full circle.

Rahe covered the first day of school at his alma mater, Lawrenceburg on Wednesday.

“That is where it all started. Back in the 1970’s, Lawrenceburg was forward-thinking enough to have a good television and radio program which led myself and several of my classmates to having long, successful careers in television,” Rahe said.

Greg will continue living in the Greendale area and we look forward to sharing more stories from his 41 years in broadcast television.

Congratulations Greg, from your friends in Southeast Indiana!
