Memorial installed to honor Amber Garrett
(BRIGHT, Ind.) -- A cross with the photo of 10-year-old Amber Garrett was placed on Jamison Creek Road Monday morning.
In 1991, Garrett's body was found in a wooded area along the road. She was kidnapped from her apartment in Harrison and was brutally murdered.
Jeffrey Allen Wogenstahl was convicted of her murder and is currently on Death Row in Ohio awaiting execution.
In 1991 family members placed a wooden cross in the memory of Amber and replaced it every few years as needed until guard rails were installed.
Former police officer Jack Tremain recently contacted retired officer Steve Mathews about the missing cross.
Family, friends and police officers gathered for a service that was held at the site Monday morning.
Woodcrafter William Spanagel, of Bright, constructed the new cross. The cross also includes a drawing that states, “In Memory of Amber Garrett, Ride Free In The Wind Forever”.
The memorial is located near Mayfield Lane on Jamison Creek Road.
