Milan class reunion to serve as fundraiser for high school band

(MILAN, Ind.) -- Milan's class of 1977 is celebrating a class reunion by giving back to their alma mater on Saturday.

Organizer Mike Schmidt says the class wanted to find a way to help Milan High School's band

"We contacted band director Stephanie Bedel and she said they need new uniform hats because the ones their using now are 20 years old," Schmidt said.

They will raise funds with basket raffles during the class reunion at the Milan American Legion.

While it was organized by the Class of 77, all Milan alumni and the general public are welcome to attend the reunion and participate in the unique fundraiser.

The basket raffle will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the reunion will start at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Right now there are 33 baskets from a variety of business and organizations.

The goal is to raise $5,479 to purchase the new uniform hats.

"If we go over the amount we plan to give a portion of the excess funds to the Milan Elementary lunch program for needy children," said Schmidt.

The Class of 1977 hopes to make it an annual event of raising funds during their class reunion.
