Immediately sprung into action last month during a department dinner
(MILAN, Ind.) -- A Milan volunteer firefighter didn't wait for the tones to drop to respond when help was needed the most.
Last month, during the Milan Volunteer Fire Department's annual Christmas dinner, a retired firefighter began choking while eating.
Current firefighter Matt Dew, also known as Squirrel, saw what was happening and sprung into action.
He successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver on the retired firefighter.
On Tuesday night, Dew was honored for his lifesaving actions and was also presented with a custom-made plaque by Milan Fire Chief Alex Hooker.
"Our department and community is very blessed to have folks like "Squirrel" serving," Chief Hooker said.
