New mountain biking trail opens at Versailles State Park

There are now 30 miles of biking trails

(VERSAILLES, Ind.) -- Organizers cut the ribbon on a new mountain biking trail at the Versailles State Park Saturday.

The Southeast Indiana Mountain Bike Association (SIMBA) led the effort as part of a two-phase project with grant money from the State of Indiana.

The new five-mile "Potato Peeler" trail is located within the Hassmer Hill area.

There are now 30 miles of mountain biking trails within the state park.

Last summer, SIMBA opened a trail that connected the Town of Versailles to the Busching Bridge area of Versailles State Park.

Organizers say the recent developments make Versailles a destination for those seeking outdoor adventures.

"Versailles State Park is truly a hidden gem here within Ripley County and it's worth checking out. There's things to do on the park, by the lake, in the campgrounds, out hiking, mountain biking and even horseback riding," said Jeff Binzen, president of the Southeast Indiana Mountain Bike Association.

SIMBA will host Hassmer Fest at the state park on September 22-24. The fest will include mountain biking, camping, kids events, organized rides a skills clinic, and more.
