Investigation into downtown fire on September 10
(RUSHVILLE, Ind.) – An investigation has been underway since a historic Rushville restaurant was destroyed in a fire on September 10.
The Corner Restaurant was located at the intersection of Main and Third streets, and had been in business for more than a half-century.
The fire spread into an adjoining building and it resulted in a roof collapse of both structures. The buildings were demolished a few days after the incident.
Indiana State Fire Marshal investigators are now sharing what they believe happened earlier this month.
They say the fire began along the south wall of the kitchen inside of Corner Restaurant.
“A trash can was located in the area of fire origin. Within the trash can multiple discarded cigarette butts were found,” investigators said.
After ruling out other hypotheses of what sparked the blaze, investigators say the discarded cigarettes cannot be eliminated as the cause.
There were 12 fire departments and 107 firefighters who responded. One firefighter was treated for a wrist injury and one paramedic was treated for smoke inhalation. Both were transported to the local hospital and later released.
Greensburg and Laurel firefighters were among some of the agencies who responded.
