Open Letter: Family of Ripley Co. Deputy who passed away shares message

Personal message from his family

(OSGOOD, Ind.) – The message below is an open letter from the family of Steve Sullivan. He served on the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office since 1998 and had been working as courthouse security. He passed away at the age of 65 last month.

Letter from the Family:

On behalf of the family of Steve Sullivan, our brother and Uncle, an open letter to the residents of Ripley County, Indiana, and all those who serve in the Ripley County Sheriff's Office, surrounding emergency service agencies and peace officers.

In addition, to all those who have stepped in or up to help during this time with meals, drinks and taking time out your schedules to make sure we have what we need.

I am the niece of Deputy Steve "Sully" Sullivan, who wishes to extend a heartfelt and deeply humbling thank you. It has taken all of us a few days to process the love, gratitude, honor and outpouring of support you have shown our family during this time. My Uncle was a great many things to many people, but his love for Ripley County and those he took an oath to protect was unmatched. When my Uncle loved, he loved hard - and he loved Ripley County.

When he was called home to his eternal resting place, the love he showed all of you was returned by the residents, the surrounding county agencies, the school corporation, the Patriot guard, and many others. Our family has been covered by your love and your prayers over these last few weeks and we have felt them.

My Uncle never knew a stranger. That was one of his best qualities. He'd lend a hand wherever it was needed and most times, you didn't have to ask, he'd just show up and he'd be there till the work was done.

He leaves a legacy in all those that knew him. His footprints have left their mark everywhere he's been and with everyone he's encountered. His life was an example that will live far beyond his days here on Earth as a life well-lived and remembered by all who knew him.

To all you, those along the streets, those who stepped out of your cars, those who stepped out of your businesses, those who quit working in your yards - to all those who showed your love and your honor to my Uncle, my family thanks you and we love you.

Sincerely,

Kayla Young (niece)

Joan Alma (sister)

Amy Quirk (niece)

Debra Smith (niece)

Ben Hutsell (nephew)
