Police: Burglars steal memorial checks made to beloved Decatur Co. resident

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) –  An investigation is underway after a beloved Decatur County resident passed away on May 22. 


71-year-old Merrill Smith was well known in the Greensburg community through his work with swine and agriculture, being the founder of Greensburg Bread of Life, and a member of numerous non-profits that have benefited the community. Read more about him here.


A Celebration of Life was held on Wednesday as the family and community deals with the loss of a beloved resident. 


The unthinkable has happened as Decatur County deputies are now investigating a residential burglary at Merrill’s house  


Investigators say someone entered the home and stole a bag containing checks made out to the Decatur County Community Foundation and the First Christian Church in memory of Merrill.


It happened between 4:30 PM on Thursday, May 30 and 4:00 PM on Friday,  May 31.

  

If you made out a check in memory of Merrill, please notify Sgt. Patrick  Graue at (812) 663-8125 with any information you can provide as to the cashing of the check if it has been cashed. 


“If your check has not been cashed, we suggest that a stop payment be put on the check. Additionally, if you have any other information in regards  to this burglary, please contact Sgt. Graue,” Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose said.
