Police: Inmates tried to bribe jailer in Decatur County

Jailer reported the conversation to superiors, police said

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- Two inmates at the Decatur County Detention Center are facing new charges after they allegedly tried to bribe a jail deputy.

Investigators say 43-year-old William Shelton, who is an inmate, passed a note to a jailer with a name and phone number on it.

"Shelton told the Detention Deputy to call the number and set up a meeting where the Detention Deputy would receive a package to be brought into the Detention Center," the Decatur County Sheriff's Office said.

The jailer was told he would receive $2,000 to deliver the package, police said.

Police say the jailer immediately reported the conversation to his supervisor which led to an investigation.

Deputies spoke with the person who was listed on the note while they also monitored the conversations of Shelton and another inmate for a week.

The investigation led to charges being filed on Shelton as well as 38-year-old John Yorn.

Both inmates were charged with Bribery as well as Trafficking with an Inmate. Each charge is listed as a level 5 felony.

Shelton was initially incarcerated on auto theft and drug possession charges in July.

Yorn was booked into the jail on suspicion of meth possession in May.
