Deputies say they discovered these stolen items
(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- A Decatur County deputy was monitoring traffic on I-74 when a vehicle was allegedly speeding last month.
The car was going 102 miles per hour, police said. A traffic stop was made at the 132 mile marker.
Officers say the noticed the smell of marijuana and it led to the occupants being questioned by police.
According to police, there were stolen items in the car from Kohl's and another store in Cincinnati. A search warrant led to 257 items being confiscated, totaling approximately $5,861.
The items included clothing, jewelry, candles and other items and the investigation is still ongoing.
Deputies say the driver, Kanterria Hawkins, gave a fake name during the traffic stop.
She has been charged with felony theft and identity deception.
Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose said this case was made possible by the Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program (CHIRP) funding the department was granted.
"CHIRP grant provides funds for Deputies and the St. Paul Town Marshal to work overtime on projects that help reduce aggressive and/or dangerous driving behaviors that could result in accidents. These funds, over the years, have resulted in numerous criminal cases," Meyerrose said.
