(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) – The Dearborn County Prosecutor’s Office is sharing more details after a man was jailed in connection to the death of a toddler.

25-year-old Jesse A. Sartin was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated battery resulting in death on Friday.

Sartin, who is dating the mother of the toddler, told investigators he was at home watching the girl when the couple’s dogs may have made her fall off an ottoman on July 24.

The 20-month-old girl, named Caroline, was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries including bleeding from the brain, hemorrhages, and facial injuries. She was later transferred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Doctors told investigators that her injuries were not consistent with a fall, but rather from abuse.

Caroline remained at Cincinnati Children’s for several days before passing away on Friday, August 1.

Her death was ruled a homicide. Prosecutors believe the injuries were consistent with shaken-baby syndrome.

Investigators spoke with Sartin again and asked if he had shaken the toddler. According to prosecutors, Sartin then said he had shaken her for about 20 seconds after a bath.

Sartin is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Monday afternoon.

A Go Fund Me account has been established for funeral expenses for the young child. Click here to access the fundraiser.
