Riley Gaines shares her story in Batesville

Updated: Jun 18

Talks about her advocacy while giving advice

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – Former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines has been in the national spotlight advocating for women’s sports, single-sex spaces, equality and safety for the past two years.

The Fox News contributor first garnered national attention after she tied with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas in the NCAA freestyle championship in 2022.

On Monday, she traveled to Batesville from her home in Nashville, Tennessee, for an event that was organized by our friends, The Overtime Podcast, which is hosted by Leon Smith and Terrance Arney.

There was a meet-and-greet prior to the event where several attendees, including many high school female athletes, had a chance to talk with Gaines.

Kelsey Borgman is a Jac-Cen-Del student who said it was an honor to meet the women’s sports advocate.

“Women have worked so hard to get to where we are today. So, it is nice to meet somebody like her who is pushing to keep what we have,” Borgman said.

Gaines told The 812 that she appreciated seeing the amount of high school girls in attendance at the event.

“I’m here to send a message that they are worthy of calling themselves champions and they should never have to fight for second place or physically compare themselves to a male, or be exploited in the locker room,” Gaines told us.

During the event, Gaines shared stories from her childhood, college swimming, gave advice to young women in the audience, and spoke about the importance of being politically-aware.

She also shared stories of when she testified in front of Congress, when she was held hostage in San Francisco, and her time with President Donald Trump.

She also complimented her time in Batesville, saying, “I could pack my U-Haul and move up here!”

The conversation with Riley Gaines lasted nearly two hours in front of a large crowd at the Romweber Party Place.

The Overtime Podcast will release the full video podcast with Riley Gaines in the near future and we will share it.
