Ripley Co. Commissioners postpone vote on solar ordinance

Commissioners vow to vote on measure next meeting

(VERSAILLES, Ind.) -- Ripley County Commissioners agreed to postpone a vote on the proposed solar panel ordinance Monday night.

It's been a controversial measure that started this summer, with some wanting more rules and oversight while others want to do as they wish on their properties.

Monday's decision came after an hour-and-a-half meeting that welcomed public comment and debate over the minimum setbacks from solar panels to adjacent properties and roadways.

The Area Planning Commission previously recommended an ordinance that has setbacks of 200 feet from non-participating property lines and 100 feet from roadways.

At least one county commissioner says he is not in favor of setbacks that go beyond the state minimum, which is ten feet from county roads, 50 feet from non-participating property lines, and 250 feet from homes.

Upon announcing that the measure would be taken under advisement, County Commissioner Kendall Hankins welcomed anyone to have a one-on-one conversation with him Monday night.

"I'm willing to listen to anyone tonight. Give us to the next meeting because we will vote on it," Hankins said.

The next Commissioners meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Monday, December 11.
