Rising Sun council votes to disband police department

Meeting held Thursday night

(RISING SUN, Ind.) – Rising Sun City Council is moving forward with a plan to disband the police department.

The council approved a measure Thursday night to proceed with the plan to close the Rising Sun Police Department.

The department currently has three police officers, which raises concerns about the ability to provide law enforcement services 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

If the department dissolves, citizens will not go without police services, as it will be handed over to the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office.

The three officers would each have an opportunity to join the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office, The 812 confirmed last week.

If County Council approves the measure, the police department will disband next month.

The next county council meeting is set for 6 p.m. on February 26.
