Scammers pretend to be police officers in Ripley County

Phone scam targets businesses

(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – There is a phone scam targeting businesses in Ripley County.

The scammer pretends to be a police officer and asks for the personal information of employees.

Ripley County deputies have investigated this and say scammers are using an app known as Caller I.D. Spoofing.

The app allows the scammer to change the phone number that shows up on your caller ID in an effort to make the call look legitimate.

Businesses that have received a call like this are encouraged to call the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office at (812) 689-5558.

Local police will never ask someone to pay a bond or any other fees over the phone. Do not give any personal information over the phone.
