Scholarship launched for Batesville woman killed in crash

For nursing students

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – The Batesville community continues to honor a young woman who was killed in a crash near Plymouth, Indiana last September.

21-year-old Riley Duerstock was a passenger in a car driven by her boyfriend, Jarrod Nichols, who is an Aurora police officer.

They were struck by an alleged drunk driver.

Riley passed away from her injuries while Jarrod has spent months recovering.

She was a 2021 Batesville High School graduate who found a passion for nursing and nurturing others.

Her parents, Deron and Jill, have launched a scholarship to honor Riley while providing support to others who are following a similar path as their daughter.

The Riley Duerstock Nursing Scholarship is a $1,000 award to a current nursing student who is pursuing a bachelor's degree, and is a graduate of Batesville High School.

The application due date is on June 1 and is available here.

Riley was a nurturer by nature who was drawn to the medical field from an early age. At the age of 16, Riley was a medical intern in Africa.

Later, she donated her eggs to women unable to conceive and, at the time of her death, was in her 3rd year of nursing school at the University of Indianapolis with hopes of becoming a flight nurse.

In her final hours, she gave the ultimate gift of life to the three recipients of her organs. She is remembered as an adventurous, loyal, ambitious, kindhearted, humble, strong, and fun young woman.
